In Search of Light
“My heart Lifted high!”
The inspiration for this project arose out of a particular encounter I had with a Bearded Iris. Looking at a delicate single petal, I was struck by its translucency and luminosity as the light filtered through it. I marvelled at how, despite its fragility, the petal held its shape with strength and perfection.
I wanted to capture the vitality and life force which all plants naturally exhibit - something indeed we can learn much from, both as a species and as individual people.

I began thinking about the intelligence of Mother Nature, this delicate flower, and other plants like it, and the functionality of thorns, tentacles and tendrils which act as a form of intuitive defence for the plant - a means of survival.
This, I thought may be a good metaphor for the human experience - the spikiness we sometimes display being like the thorn protecting the rose, in that it is a form of defence against the fragility, the vulnerability we contain within.
In this series of ceramic wall sculpture, inspired by the flower, I decided to explore the potential of porcelain to create a form of sculpture - an imaginary plant that seeks to express the overwhelming energy and power of nature to prevail in the world, despite the odds. The hard sharp spikes in the work point towards this strength and resilience.
The pressing of soft clay into the palms of my hands to create each individual petal and its spikes is for me, a meditation, a time for reflection, and ultimately, an opportunity to give life. Evolving over time, the project takes on its own momentum, as I simply guide the process.
